A gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock depicting a bearded Greek warrior wearing a helmet and holding a spear, representing Leonidas, King of Sparta from 489 to 480 BC. The silvered dial is set within a pedestal on which rest a ewer, a cup, a laurel branch, and a letter inscribed "THERMOPYLES," recalling the battle Leonidas led against the Persians, which brought him fame but in which he met his death. The rectangular base is decorated with war symbols, palmettes, and laurel, the emblem of victory. Restoration period, circa 1820. Dimensions: W: 38cm, D: 16cm, H: 62cm. In good overall condition, with some stains on the dial and slight wear consistent with age. The wire-driven mechanism has been cleaned, serviced, and is in working order.
