A large, gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock from the Restoration period depicting two figures at the top: the man appears to be an artist, shown seated, holding a palette. His curly hair peeks out from under a wide-paned hat. He is dressed in Renaissance attire consisting of a fitted coat, an ornate collar, breeches, and boots with turned-down cuffs. Beside him, a woman in a gown stands, leaning slightly towards him. Their proximity and gestures suggest an exchange between the two figures.
The circular silver dial with Roman numerals is framed by a gilt border adorned with flowers and leaves, set within a rectangular case framed by large, fleshy acanthus leaves. The base is decorated with floral motifs, scrolls, palmettes, and a garland.
Alongside the neo-classical movement, under the reign of Charles X and the rise to power of Louis-Philippe, subjects of romantic inspiration developed, such as gardeners, hunters, troubadours, characters in medieval or Renaissance clothes, which our clock illustrates well.
