A Satsuma faience vase with a rich decoration of polychrome enamels and gold, depicting picturesque, typically Japanese landscapes, dating from the 20th century. Between the sea, mountains, and rivers are charming red and blue thatched-roof houses, surrounded by lush vegetation. The small bridges and boats evoke Japanese Zen gardens. The neck and shoulder are adorned with geometric patterns and flowers. The vase bears a mark on the base in the form of a kanji character. Satsuma porcelain, which originated in 1598 under the influence of Shimazu Yoshihiro, is a type of Japanese earthenware. This powerful Japanese lord intended to establish a local pottery industry in the Satsuma region. For four hundred years, Satsuma potters developed original earthenware techniques, making it one of the most prestigious names in Japanese ceramics. 20th century period, Circa: 1900.
