SET INCLUDING A CLOCK & A PAIR OF DIRECTORY CANDELABRA

This large clock in gilt and patinated bronze, and this pair of candelabra, are sold separately or as a set: 

- The Large Directoire Clock : 

A large Directoire period clock distinguished by its architectural silhouette and contrasting patinas. The circular white dial, with Roman numerals, rests on a console with lion's paw feet. On either side, symmetrical scrolls with ears of wheat extend into garlands of grapes and a central bouquet of flowers that crowns the whole. In the center, below the dial, an openwork decoration of laurel branches highlights the pendulum. The clock rests on a rectangular white marble base adorned with a relief frieze depicting putti playing on a chariot (the chariot of the god Mars).

- The Pair of Candelabra 

A pair of Directoire period candelabra in patinated and gilt bronze and black and white marble. They feature a decoration of winged sphinxes in patinated bronze, each bearing a woven basket motif filled with fruit and feathers, from which the two candle arms extend. The white marble base is adorned with a mask of Apollo within a lozenge surrounded by scrolls and a palmette frieze. The whole rests on a black marble plinth with four toupie feet.

These candelabra are in the Egyptian Revival style, an aesthetic influenced by the Egyptian Expedition between 1798 and 1801. While the ornamental vocabulary was already inspired by antiquity under Louis XVI, it focused on Egyptian motifs at the very beginning of the 19th century. These designs, adorned with sphinxes and palmettes, continued during the Consulate and the Empire.
