These two figurines were very popular in the 19th century and were widely copied and reproduced in bronze, marble, or bisque. The most prized bisque models were those from the Dihl and Guérhard factory.
They were long mistakenly attributed to the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova, whereas the originals by Charles-Gabriel Sauvage, known as Lemire, have since been discovered in the Louvre's collections. Our two matching figurines are of fine quality and marked "Canova" and with Samson's mark: an intertwined S.
