Set of two oil on canvas paintings depicting "L'orage" and "Le printemps" signed lower right "L. Laussox d'après Cot" in a fine molded, stuccoed and gilded wood frame.
19th century French school.
Pierre Auguste Cot was born in Bédarieux, then studied at the Beaux Arts in Toulouse and Paris. He exhibited his work at the Paris Salon from 1863 onwards, and became popular in the 1870s. The two original paintings are now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and are considered his principal works. Le Printemps is dated 1873 and L'Orage 1880. Such was their success that several copies were made in the late 19th century, like our paintings. We have been unable to find any further information about our copyist.
Sight size: H: 108cm, L: 63 cm.
Condition report: On its original canvas and stretcher with minor paint losses. The gilded wooden frames have been restored in some areas.
