Large pair of Louis XVI style sconces in chased and gilded bronze, with two twisted arms. Each fixture is adorned with goat heads, eagles holding a garland of flowers in their beaks, masks crowned with flowers, oak leaves and acanthus. The shaft is adorned with scrolling foliage and topped with a pinecone. Our pair of sconces is based on a design by Jean-Louis Prieur (1732-1795) - a sculptor, chiseller and one of the most illustrious bronzemakers of the Neoclassical period - executed around 1780, and preserved in the library of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Traditionally attributed to Pierre Gouthière (gilder and chaser to the kings Louis XV and Louis XVI), an identical pair is preserved at the Château de Fontainebleu and a second pair at the Cleveland Museum of Art. 19th century, Circa: 1860 Dim: W:30cm, D:17cm, H:66cm. Excellent condition.
