Allegorical sculpture in brown patina bronze representing "The Sower of Ideas". Signed: "E. PICAULT" and titled on the base: "Semeur d'idées par E. Picault Mentionné au Salon". Marked on the base, left: "Salon des Beaux Arts". "Le semeur d'idées" is probably a reduction of the bronze group that Picault exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1896 under the title "Le livre". On the pages of the open book at his feet is the inscription: "Aux quatre vents du ciel il sème les idées germes de l'avenir. EP". A similar model is on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Chambéry. Emile Louis Picault (1833-1915), sculptor and medallist in Paris, was a pupil of the painter Royer. From 1863 onwards, he regularly exhibited allegorical, patriotic and mythological subjects at the Salon. His works are often accompanied by Latin or French sentences. Bibliography: Kjellberg, Pierre.
