Bizen ceramic Ikebana vase by Takashi Baba

This work by Japanese Bizen ceramist Takashi Baba once again demonstrates his mastery of organic, sculptural forms. This ceramic Ikebana vase evokes a spiral, almost mineral form, reminiscent of natural elements such as shells or fossilized horns. The rough texture of the object is highlighted by shades of brown and black, the result of the wood-firing process typical of Bizen-yaki. Here, Baba plays with shapes and materials, creating a piece that seems alive and in motion.

Bizen ceramics (Bizen-yaki) is one of Japan's oldest pottery traditions, dating back over 1,000 years. It is distinguished by its absence of glaze and its natural textures, achieved by firing with wood in high-temperature kilns. This process creates unique glazed ash patterns and deep earthy colors. Bizen-yaki is prized for its sturdiness, raw aesthetics and close connection with nature.
