Louis XV period "en bateau" duchess in moulded, carved, blue and cream lacquered wood, by the famous cabinetmaker Jean-René Nadal l'Ainé (1733-1783). It rests on eight arched legs underlined by floral motifs. The duchesse is a very elegant upholstered lounge chair that appeared in France under Louis XV and was used by elegant women as a resting bed. Typically feminine, this new seat met a greater demand for ease and comfort. From an aesthetic point of view, it marks the transition from the flamboyant Rococo style of Louis XIV to a lighter style of furniture, both in terms of design and colour.
The "bateau" model always has two backrests, often of different heights. Our duchess is stamped "J. NADAL L'AÎNÉ". A very fine 18th-century model.
