A gilt bronze and Griotte red marble inkwell comprising a pen case and two inkwells framing an allegorical figure representing "A River" after Jean-Jacques Caffieri (1725-1792). The river is depicted as a nude old man crowned with reeds, seated on an urn from which water flows. His left hand rests on an oar, while his right hand holds the rim of the urn. The bronze is marked on the back: "F. BARBEDIENNE, FONDEUR" (Founder). The oblong base is finely chased with shells and scrolls and rests on six toupie feet. Late 19th century work. Circa 1880. Dimensions: L: 36cm, D: 21cm, H: 24cm. In good overall condition, with some restored chips and natural cracking in the marble.
