Gilt bronze and red Griotte marble inkwell comprising a pen tray and two ink cups framing an allegorical figure depicting "A River" after Jean-Jacques Caffieri (1725-1792). The river is illustrated by a naked old man crowned with reeds, seated on an urn from which water flows. The left hand rests on an oar, while the right holds the rim of the urn. The bronze is marked on the back: "F. BARBEDIENNE, FONDEUR". The oblong base is finely chased with shells and foliage, and stands on six toupie feet. Late 19th century. Circa: 1880 Dim: W:36cm, D:21cm, H:24cm. In good condition, with a few restored chips and crack natural marble.
