Brown patina bronze group depicting Venus and Adonis standing atop a black marble terminal clock with applied frieze decoration of an antique-style procession of huntresses in gilt bronze. Dial with Roman numerals for the hours and gilt bronze frame. Original movement cleaned, overhauled and in working order. French school of the 19th century. Our bronze can be stylistically compared to works by Jean-Baptiste dit Auguste Clésinger (1814-1883), in the choice of subject, a mythological theme in which he specialized, in the treatment of the faces and in the attitude of the two protagonists represented here. The artist chose to depict the best-known scene in the Adonis story, in which Venus tries to prevent Adonis from going hunting. Napoleon III period, Circa: 1870 Dim: W:25cm, D:54cm, H:78cm.
