Small rocking pedestal table in black lacquered wood and cardboard. The curved top is decorated with gilded foliage motifs on the rim and base, and painted flowers inlaid with mother-of-pearl in the center. It stands on a baluster shaft ending in a round base decorated with gilded scrolls and foliage. Napoleon III period. Good condition. In the 1850s and 1860s, black was the color of luxury, reminiscent of ebony and Far Eastern lacquers. The bourgeoisie bought furniture and objects in papier-mâché made from boiled cotton, lacquered and inlaid with mother-of-pearl, a technique that made it possible to achieve a play of brilliance and complex shapes at low cost.
