Pair of gilded bronze candlesticks with medallion decoration and lampshade, 19th century
A pair of 19th century Louis XVI style carved and chased gilt bronze pikes-cierges, mounted as lamp bases. The fluted baluster base is punctuated by small cushions at mid-height, and rests on a tripod base ending on small claw feet. On each side of the base, a medallion featuring Jesus, Mary and Joseph stands out in a cartouche. The shaft is adorned with acanthus leaves, pampers and foliate scrolls. The torchiere-shaped lamp is presented on a circular ormolu shell base, topped by a spigot housing a pagoda lampshade in cream silk belted with gilded fringed braids. The central arm is activated by a lever switch to light a bulb. Each torchiere has a gold-plated power cord.
