Sculpture of a young woman in white marble, known as the "Thoughtful Young Woman". Dressed in a loose cloak with embroidery falling from her right shoulder, the young woman is seated on a draped rock. Her left hand holds ears of wheat, while her right hand holds her chin. Her sideways gaze is meditative, her hair is tied in a turban and her feet are bare. The scene is presented on a circular tray of pink Brignolles marble. The marble is signed Pugi below the base. Guglielmo Pugi (1850-1915) was an Italian sculptor specializing in the direct carving of Carrara marble for export. He created female figures in the taste of Art and is best known for a bust of King Umberto I in Fiesole, a small town on the outskirts of Florence. Circa: 1880 Dim: W:31cm, D:31cm, H:63cm. In very good condition. Broken base restored.
