Louis XVI style work table in marquetry of various woods and gilded bronzes. This charming Napoleon III-period work table opens with a curved top adorned in a cartouche with superb marquetry work depicting music (tambourine, bow, quiver, etc.). The cartouche is framed by friezes of flowers, foliage and geometric motifs, finely inlaid with dosse wood and painted wood. The piece is inlaid on all sides with scrolls, fleurons and foliate friezes. When open, it reveals a mirror, a central drawer with runners and two small side drawers. The work table closes with a small key. The whole rests on four tapered, fluted legs, punctuated by chased bronzes. A spacer crosses over a carved gilded bronze finial. Allegorical themes around music developed especially in the last quarter of the 18th century under Louis XVI. Interest in the arts, such as music, went hand in hand with the emancipation of society in the Age of Enlightenment. Circa: 1860
