A pair of Sèvres ceramic amphora vases with marbled blue monochrome decoration. Each vase features an ormolu frame with pearl friezes and two small garlanded handles. Both vases are signed "Sèvres" on the underside. Their shape, decoration and marmoreal blue color are typical of the work of Paul Milet, ceramist and son of Optat Milet, Sèvres porcelain-maker, who did not sign his earliest productions, but from 1911, after his father's death, asserted himself with his "MP Sèvres" mark in a dotted circle. Over the next few years, the Manufacture de porcelaine de Sèvres, concerned about the possible confusion between the products of one company and those of another, asked the ceramist to change his trademark, which he did by reversing the initials. On October 4, 1930, he registered the trademark "PM Sèvres" in the same dotted circle. We know that some older pieces are simply signed "Sèvres". The mark on our vases is that of the factory between 1872 and 1899, and would therefore correspond to the early period of Paul Milet's career as a young ceramist at Sèvres.

Marmoreal decoration (lat. "marmoreus" - of marble) gives the material the appearance of marble or is made of marble. To give a piece of porcelain a marmoreal effect, we work on a veining pattern typical of the marble we want it to resemble.
