Satsuma earthenware vase with rich polychrome and gold enamel decoration, depicting picturesque Japanese landscapes, dating from the 20th century. Nestled between the sea, mountains and rivers are pretty houses with red and blue thatched roofs, surrounded by abundant vegetation. The small bridges and boats are reminiscent of Japanese Zen gardens. The neck and shoulder are adorned with geometric motifs and flowers. The vase features a kanji mark under the base. Satsuma porcelain, created in 1598 under the influence of Shimazu Yoshihiro, is a type of Japanese earthenware. This great Japanese lord intended to establish a local pottery industry on the Satsuma territory. For four hundred years, the potters of Satsuma developed original earthenware techniques, making it one of the greatest references in Japanese ceramics.
