Marble sculpture, stone & alabaster statue
Probably the most commonly used stone in sculpture, marble has been appreciated since Antiquity for its transparency (comparable to that of human skin), suppleness and durability over time. The preference for marble over other materials is based on the fineness of its grain, which enables the sculptor to render the finest details of the statue. Alabaster, on the other hand, enhances the color of skin tones and drapery, thanks to its naturally warmer hue.
Galerie Atena offers a select collection of antique marbles: figurative marble statues, stone sculptures and alabaster statuettes from the 19th century to the Art Deco period. The subjects represented are varied: busts of young women, odalisques, draped female figures, couples and goddesses from ancient mythology, putti, busts of young boys, copies after famous statuettes byAntonio Canova, Houdon, Falconet, Lemire and Guglielmo Pugi.
Among the most frequently used types of stone are white marble, Carrara marble, black marble, alabaster and polychrome alabaster.
